Last Vestiges of the 70s
This series of photographs are of books from my library that were purchased and largely printed during the 1970s. The photographs are of extremely high resolution to show the minute details of the book covers in order to magnify the evidence of their usage and materiality. The old question of whether we can judge a book by its cover is presumed and asks whether their structural support can reveal something beyond what the words inside say? Since I usually purge my books on a regular basis, these books have managed to survive the impulse to make room for new. The result is a kind of archive of interests and choices from that decade that continue to linger. Some of these books no longer have the same purchase they had in the 1970s, which tells a story both of that time and our current one. Thus a close inspection of the photographs asks what it is that can be determined from the book covers, about the book, about the time, and about the collector?
